THE NORTH BAY CONSTRUCTION DIFFERENCE

Owner of North Bay Construction, John Fox, has been in the building industry for nearly 30 years. He grew up around it and knew it was his calling from an early age.
“My uncle was a property developer in Ireland and would always take me to job sites as a child,” Fox says. “I remember being fascinated with the entire process. I knew then that this was my passion. After working in Boston as a finish carpenter, I moved to San Francisco and decided to go out on my own.”
Since 2000, Fox has been helping Bay Area residents realize their home’s potential. Trained in carpentry, skilled in assembling the best in renovation teams and intuitive with design, Fox is the full package as a general contractor.
“I love being able to combine all of my passions into a career,” he says. “It’s brilliant to help make people’s dreams a reality. Whether it’s a big or small job, it makes such a big difference to these families.”
He’s worked on commercial as well as residential projects. The reoccuring commentary from clients though is that Fox is a master at understanding space and how to optimize what is given.
“Many San Franciscans are looking for more space,” says Fox, “but aren’t able to purchase a new home due to rising property costs. Often the only option homeowners have is to remodel within their space.”
That’s what Fox and North Bay Construction does best.
“There are lots of ways to do this,” says Fox. “You can convert or repurpose existing space, or even expand into the outside.”

Fox shared three small ways that homeowners can make big changes to their living spaces.

1. Convert Your Garage

If you have a garage, converting it to living space or a separate unit is a great option. It’ll automatically increase the property value of your home.
The garage of a home in the Woodland Park neighborhood of San Francisco was converted into an in-law apartment for the homeowner’s elderly parents. It included a bedroom and a kitchen so they would have their own space.

2. Repurpose Existing Spaces

Remodeling underused spaces, such as a basement or an awkward landing, will give you a much more functional home. Many basements in San Francisco homes are not being used, or they’re used for storage. If you’re looking for more room, rethink what you have.

The owners of a home in San Francisco’s Haight-Ashbury neighborhood wanted more room for their growing family. We worked within an underutilized floor of their home to create a large master bath, study area and bedroom.

3. Expand Outdoors

In San Francisco, remodeling an outdoor area is a great way to add livable space. You can do that by adding lounging and dining areas on top of patios, decks or innovative landscaping.

In this modern backyard in the Mission District, a remodel created plenty of space for a young, active family to enjoy year-round. We installed a patio with a gas fire pit and heaters, a covered lounge area, a living wall, a water feature and artificial turf. The staircase has a built-in slide for a fun playground element.
